Earlier this year, Cisco announced new stackable switches that put them in a better position to compete with some of the lower-cost competitors such as HP and Dell.  These switches still incorporate the features that set Cisco above their competition but also offer a more competitive price point.  These switches come in three product lines - the Catalyst 2960S, Catalyst 3560X, and Catalyst 3750X - and offer features such as 24 or 48 ports of Gigabit Ethernet, Power over Ethernet, advanced stacking capabilities, 10Gb uplinks, and redundant power options in the highest-end configurations.  To discuss how these switches can fit into your environment, please contact your Simpler-Webb account rep.

I had originally planned on a daily blog post about Cisco Live! But that rapidly fell by the wayside as it was super busy, information overload, and long, tiring days.  That said, it was definitely worth it, and I was able to learn a great deal about the Cisco Nexus switching architecture, network management, network security, and Cisco Unified Wireless Networking.  I also had the opportunity to take (and pass!) the test for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Wireless certification and one of the four tests for the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Wireless certification.  The test for the CCNP Wireless certification also renewed my CCNP, CCDP (design) and CCSP (security) certifications which were coming up for renewal in a couple months.
If you haven’t been to Cisco Live!, it’s a great event that provides a lot of opportunity to learn about new technologies Cisco is working on or has just released, as well as existing technologies.  If you have the opportunity to go, I highly recommend it!

The first day of the annual Cisco conference is before it actually gets into full swing and consists entirely of sessions that are at an additional cost to the general conference itself.  In the afternoon, I attended "Network Management Architecture Leading Practices", a four hour session which went into details about what things to consider with the various aspects of monitoring and managing network, which gave me some good things to think about related to our managed network device and managed firewall products.

In the morning, I attended a hands-on lab in which we learned about the Cisco Nexus 1000V switch.  The Nexus 1000V is a software switch for VMWare ESX which greatly improves upon the features available in the VMWare vSwitch.  Among others, the Nexus 1000V supports vMotion & high availability, QoS, ACLs and Etherchannel.  This ensures network uptime in the virtual environment while allowing prioritization & filtering of network traffic before it hits the switch the ESX host is connected to and increased bandwidth & redundancy.  All of these features make the Nexus 1000V an excellent solution.

Please contact your Simpler-Webb account rep if you'd like to discuss our managed services offerings and/or our VMWare consulting practice.

Mozilla has released an update to it's popular firefox browser. The updated version (3.6.4) addresses numerous security vulnerabilities and improves stability by isolating browser plug-ins within the browser. The update will be applied automatically for most users using the auto-update feature within the browser or can be download directly from http://www.mozilla.com.

The browser isolation feature in this update will prevent add-on's, such as Adobe flash or Microsoft silverlight, from crashing the entire browser when problems occur within specific plug-ins. This architecture is becoming an industry standard among most browsers.

When updating your firefox browser it's also a good time to update your Adobe flash player. The current version is 10.1 and you can update to it directly from this link: http://www.adobe.com/go/EN_US-H-GET-FLASH

Cisco has released IPS signature update S496. This update contains 4 new signatures:

·         IBM Access Support ActiveX Control Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
·         Oracle WebLogic Server searchQuery Remote Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability
·         Microsoft Internet Explorer HTML Objects Memory Corruption Vulnerability
·         FTP Service and Berkeley rsh and rlogin Utilities Unauthorized Access Issue

Of these, the first three are ranked high severity and only the first has a CVSS rating above 7.0.

The update also includes updates to 13 existing signatures for vulnerabilities in various Microsoft Office and Adobe products.   The update retires 4 existing signatures.

See complete list here.

If you are a Managed Security-IPS client, Simpler-Webb will perform all updates to protect against these vulnerabilities. If you'd like more information on how IPS signature updates work or about Managed Security, please contact us at info@swinc.com or call (800) 808-3083.
