File Replication Services (FRS)

This technology allows you to identify particular shares / folders to "replicate" throughout the AD to other specified locations.

For example: you have a folder named "new business" on Server A and a folder named "new business" on Server B. We can set up the AD to replicate the contents between the folders so that you always maintain a current copy of the data within those folders.

With FRS, you can also locate data in a main office as well as replicating it in a remote branch. In essence, you can replicate the data into an off-site storage location. Depending on how we adjust the settings within AD, file replication happens Depending on how we adjust the settings within AD, file replication can occur hourly or as frequently as every few minutes with available bandwidth.

FRS works with the multiple target capability of DFS (See DFS above). If we point a logical drive to multiple physical locations, we can highlight the two physical locations and set the parameters for the FRS control to replicate data between the shares - maintaining data consistency between the two different locations.

Once the replication partners are established, FRS handles the actual replication requirements. As a user modifies a particular file within a particular physical location, the file replicates across the network to the other physical location.

With FRS, it doesn't matter what physical server users log into because FRS ensures the shares are maintained. If a server goes down because of server maintenance, cut communications lines, or natural disasters, DFS routes users to a different physical server through DFS and FRS maintains the data - all without your users knowing or missing a beat.
