An Internet connection |
| Question: |
|
What if I only
have a Dial-Up connection to my ISP? |
| Answer: |
|
That's OK, but... |
|
1. |
You will need a dedicated
IP address from your ISP to make the DNS work. The
requirement for this comes from the DNS and SMTP
protocols. Without the dedicated IP, your inbound mail
will not get delivered. This is sometimes a problem that
will cause you to look for a new ISP. |
|
2. |
You will need a somewhat
cooperative ISP. They will have to set up some DNS entries
for you and be willing to queue your mail until you dial
in and get it. |
|
3. |
You will need a way to
tell the ISP host to dequeue your mail when you dial in. |
| Question: |
|
Does the
Microsoft Exchange Support UUCP? |
| Answer: |
|
Not out of the box. There
are some third party providers that have UUCP gateway
products. To find one, see

NTServer/nts/exec/vendors/
freeshare/ComServ.asp#uucp |
| Question: |
|
Do I really
need a fixed IP address? |
| Answer: |
|
Yes. |
| Question: |
|
How do I
configure Exchange Server IM(C/S) to get my mail from a
POP account? |
| Answer: |
|
You
don't. This task makes
very little sense. There are some kludges that people have put together to accomplish it, but you are better off
implementing it the right way as per this document. We have expanded this a little in an
Exchange and POP diatribe.
However, if
you absolutely insist,
then see http://www.slipstick.com
for more help.
