Exchange
- SMTP
- Common Problems -
Below are some common problems
you may experience with Exchange. Another source of
information is Microsoft KB document
Q148985,
which
contains a short list of Q&A. It is from Exchange 4.0
RTM, so some things are pretty out of date, but some are still
accurate.
| Problem: |
IMC won't start with a 2140 error. |
| Solution: |
TCP/IP or DNS is likely
misconfigured. There are KB articles on
this as well. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/support
and search on "2140". |
| Problem: |
IMC won't start with a 2140 error
AND a 4086 error. |
| Solution: |
One of your network protocols, likely IPX or
Appletalk, is screwed up. |
| Problem: |
I can send mail, but cannot receive
mail. |
| Solution: |
Likely the addresses
do not match the incoming addresses. Or
the DNS is messed up. |
| Problem: |
I can receive mail, but cannot send
mail. |
| Solution: |
Likely the Address Space is
misconfigured. |
| Problem: |
IMC
will not start when the host is unreachable. |
| Solution: |
Using a FQDN in the "Forward
all mail to host" field will cause the IMC to not start if
the host is unreachable. If you use an IP address, it will start
regardless of the accessibility of the host. This can be an issue
for Dial-Up connections. |
| Problem: |
When
I try to administer the Internet Mail Service I get an error and some of the tabs are
missing. |
| Solution: |
Either the X:\ExchSrvr\Add-Ins
directory is no longer shared as ADD-INS or there is a permissions
problem with the share or the files in it. |
| Problem: |
Can I
remove X400 addresses from my mailboxes? |
| Solution: |
DO NOT remove the X400 addresses from your
mailboxes. You may not use X400, but Exchange does. If you remove
these address entries, you will be sorry. |
| Problem: |
Exchange
is not dialing. |
| Solution: |
If
Exchange isn't dialing, check the permitted times. It has been
pointed out to us by a sheepish user that this is easier to
overlook than it ought to be. |
| Problem: |
I need to have multiple addresses
for each user. |
| Solution: |
You can configure an additional address for
each user by using the "admin /i" import function to add
a "Secondary-Proxy-Address" field. Or, new in 5.0, you
can configure an additional routing entry that points
exchange.domainx.com to domainx.com (which is inbound). The IMS
will actually do this now - neat. |
